Developed while creating the performance Hourglass, Protective Vest is part of a material exploration of weight, burden, and what it means to carry.
Using everyday materials from the artist’s immediate surroundings: ice bags filled with sand, stitched with nylon thread made from household plastic bags, the work imposes real heaviness on the body. It embodies the ongoing attempt to find security and protection within the reality we live in, and the ways this attempt can weigh down, constrain, and remain deeply fragile.
